As we are on vacation, staying in a very nice hotel, I am reminded of how some people choose to spend their vacations. To some, camping is the greatest vacation there is. I would not be one of those people. I just don't understand why people love to go camping, yet, every summer, camp grounds are packed with people. I can understand the cost savings of camping. If you want to go somewhere and a hotel room is too expensive, camping can be that cost effective way to still go on that vacation. I get that. However, the people that their only reason to go camping is the enjoyment they get from camping, I don't understand. It just doesn't make sense to me.
Brilliant inventors have come up with things that give us comfort, things like air conditioning, indoor running water, a bed. Why would you purposefully give these things up? And, probably my most pressing question for you camping loving people is that, if you are the type that gets no greater joy then when you are camping, then why do you have a house? If camping and living that lifestyle are so awesome, why not live that way 365 days a year?
Do you enjoy camping? If so, please let me know why? I don't know that I would ever change my mind about camping, but would be interested in hearing your point of view on the subject.

I couldn't identify more. My dad bought a new pickup camper when I was about 13. We took 1 trip with it and my folks determined that camping was not their idea of a vacation. They sold it when we returned. So, my hardy pioneer background hardly qualifies me for anything close to camping. I do enjoy grilling out, enjoying a sunrise over the beach, and breathing clean mountain air, but I too like to return to a nice shower and a standard bed in a climate controlled room.
The closest thing to camping was our annual trip to Canada fishing.
We rented cabins (not Gatlinburg cabins) but cabins with running water and electric no tv or microwave. Is was always good to get back home
My parents had six kids and one income...camping was the only vacation we could afford and we camped locally. You know what? Camping trips are some of my best memories of childhood! Why?
My parents were "stuck" with us...no TV, no telephones (this was pre-cell phones), no housework or jobs, and no distractions...and all we all did was eat and play all day! I'm not outdoorsy at all -- and it rained on almost every camping trip we took -- but I still love the smell of burning logs and melting marshmallows.
Kevin, on the other hand, wouldn't camp again for all the money in the world...I've dragged him a few times and he has vehemently said "NEVER AGAIN!"

Camping is done in many ways and many of them are quite un-fun to me! However, when I go, I choose to truly leave most convieniences behind and go backpacking. Carrying everything i need on my back 6 miles or so into the woods. Really getting back to basics and enjoying each other, not all the stimulation that we see every day.
On the other hand you have this stuff people call camping where they take their whole house with them. I am not a fan. If you are going to be outside enjoying outside, don't bring your satellite dish and blow up lawn toys with you!
