Traffic

Every single work day, I drive at least an hour to work and an hour home from work. A good portion of that time is spent being stuck in traffic. It should only take me 35 to 40 minutes each way, but, because of the traffic, I spend more then 2 hours every day in the car. It becomes so frustrating to sit there not being able to do anything but listen to the radio. The majority of what I listen to is the news, weather, and traffic reports. Being in the car 2 hours a day, I hear the same news, weather, and traffic over and over again. The time spent seems so unproductive. It becomes very monotonous and the traffic can become really frustrating.

I know when I write what I am about to write, many of you will probably be thinking "Duh!" It took me almost a year of driving 2 hours a day to realize that instead of spending the time frustrated and listening to the same reports over and over again, I could be spending the time talking to God. I know, "Duh!" Before my realization, I did often pray and talk to God on my trip to work, but it wasn't consistent. But now, I make it something I do daily. It has made the most unproductive part of my day into the most productive. I still listen to the news, weather, and traffic reports, but only once. I spend the rest of my time talking to God and seeking his guidance. The great by-product of this is that I am not only drawing closer to God, but my traffic frustration has really minimized. It is hard to get too upset, from sitting in traffic, when I realize that sitting in traffic gives me more time to talk to God.

Hey, this is a good reminder. My travel time is only about 10 minutes to work, but I like to use inspirational music to inspire me to use the time for prayer and worship. I also have a family prayer CD of music. What is that? you may ask. I downloaded select songs that remind me of members of the family. When the song I have selected for Sarah comes on, I pray for her. When Rob's theme starts playing, I pray for him. It's just another way to use travel time purposefully.
